The Tukwila Historical Society has announced the first ever tour of 25 historical homes, buildings and sites around Tukwila.

Scheduled for Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, the tour begins at the Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave. S. The tour is part of the year-long Tukwila Centennial Celebration.

The tour includes examples of Craftsman Bungalow, American Four-Square and Queen Ann architecture.

The Helen Nelsen home (1905), listed on the Washington State Register of Historic Places, is meticulously maintained.

The Tukwila Library (1920) was originally as a one-room schoolhouse and maintains most of its original architecture. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

The McLeland-Wieser house (1908) includes all original stained wood trim and was recently restored utilizing energy saving green technology.

"We want to show people that Tukwila has great neighborhoods with historical homes and is just a terrific place to live," says tour organizer and city councilwoman Kathy Hougardy.

Two tour packages are available. The Interior Tour ($12) includes all sites plus interiors of three private homes and three public buildings. Free limited bus service is available for Interior Tour at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Exterior Tour ($5) is self-guided only.

Discounts are offered for seniors, children under 18 and families.

Tickets are available at the community center on the day of tour.
