Graffiti causes problem

Wednesday, May 07, 2008

There is a costly, growing, unsightly and undesirable problem in our country that I feel is neither being taking very seriously nor proper steps being taken to resolve.

The problem is GRAFFITI. You see it on buildings, fences in our Public Parks, almost anywhere. It seems the younger generation is trying to express themselves for what ever reason. Another outlet must be found to distract our youth into a more desirable attraction.

My recent visit and tour around the continent of Australia visiting 15 cities was an eye-opener for me as I found no litter on the streets or parks. Likewise, no Graffiti except one wall that looked like an artist had created it.

Now if Australia can control Graffiti and litter in their country, what does it take for the United States to learn and follow their lead?

Is enforcement or better training from our schools or from our homes the answer? I feel a combination of all would be a starting point and a thing called cooperation needs to be utilized?

" fortunatetly sir you must have visited the right cities to come to the conclusion that Australia has no graffiti or anti social behavior problems. My company here in Melbourne conducts street by street graffiti audits for cities and infrastructure in several states and I can advise we have very serious issues. I visit the states about 4 times a year training on graffiti abatement, Tripwiresystems and other measures we use and see first hand that yes by comparison you have more graffiti than we do but the ratio should be measured by population also.

The two cannot be really be compared as there is a whole set of different circumstances in that we dont have the gang issues America does, nor do we have the size of other anti social behavioural issues and for that we are fortunate. I feel that in most cases many of the American cities we speak to or train do everything possible with the resources they have at hand but no matter where you live there is always room for improvement. Graffiti here comes in waves usually trending from our society copycatting American trends and what kids try to copy from media, music videos and so forth however if our local cities keep it in check we find we simply dont get the rampant repeat offenders and therefore large amounts of time between offences or notable graffiti attacks. we are the lucky ones.
