May 24 UPDATE: Highline School Board members do not have to formally vote on the new security plan recently unveiled by district administrators.

District officials, however, emphasize that they would not move forward with the plan without informal board agreement.

While the district did hold a community meeting May 20 on the recommendations, a presentation was not given at the May 22 school board meeting.

Here is our previous coverage with corrections made:

School security officers will remain armed under a proposal announced May 14 by Highline Public Schools.

A public meeting will be held Monday, May 20, 6-7:30 p.m., at district headquarters (ERAC), 15675 Ambaum Blvd. S.W.

The school board holds its regular meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 6 p.m., at Southern Heights Elementary,11249 14th Ave. S.

Here is the news release from the district:

More extensive staff training and strong coordination with local law enforcement are the hallmarks of a proposal to improve safety and security at Highline schools. The proposal will be presented to the community at a public meeting on Monday, May 20.

Historic B-17 returns Saturday, May 25 through Monday to offer rides

The “Aluminum Overcast,” the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EEA) restored B-17 bomber, returns to Boeing Field to offer rides Saturday, May 25 through Monday, Memorial Day. People can book flights at the Museum of Flight.

Pictured left is WWII B-17 pilot, Ken Wheeler, 90, of Gig Harbor, with current B-17 pilot, Rick Fernalld, at Paine Field, Everett, before the plane flew down to Seattle for the long weekend. Wheeler, who flew with the 15th Air Force out of Italy, is a docent at the Museum of Flight. If you see him, he might tell you about the time three of his four engines failed and he and his crew bailed with parachutes over Croatia. He landed in a tree, cut himself down, and escaped.

Vu close to championship

Cecilia Vu of Evergreen High School (White Center) led a procession of area players to the Class 2A girls state tennis tournament with her championship round achievements out of the West Central District tournament in closing action at the Bremerton Tennis Club on Saturday, May 18.

In the championship match, Vu was locked into a tense battle with LIezel Villanueva of Lindbergh in girls singles. The first set played out with neither player giving much ground until the action reached a 6-6 stand off. Brokered in a bristling battle, the Wolverine finally fell in a 7-4 tie-breaker. Action in the second set was just tenacious before Villanueva emerged with the No. 1 seed to state which will be held on May 24-25 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington Campus. Vu opens up against Calle Hanson of East Valley (Spokane).

Beginning with the round of eight, Vu stayed in control throughout her winners bracket matches.
SLIDESHOW: Tyee Boys Soccer Team is Rewriting History with Playoff Wins!

The Tyee boys soccer team is on an amazing ride and making school history in a sporting way.

Tyee (14-4-1) is in the playoffs for the first time since 1982. For you who are slow at math (like me) that is 31 years ago! Remember 1982, well some of us do. That was the year the Commodore 64 computer and the first CD players were introduced by Sony - my how technology has changed!

Tyee has already made school history, winning its first playoff game by a score of 4-1 over Capitol of Olympia, on May 15th at Highline Memorial Stadium. That was their first-round match in the Class 2A Playoffs. So from now on, every win continues to rewrite their history book as they move towards their goal to be State Champions.
