SLIDESHOW: Tyee advances into soccer quarterfinals

It's been a season of firsts for the Tyee High School boys soccer team.
The Totems made their first state playoff appearance since 1982 when they hosted Capital this past Tuesday, and they posted their first state victory ever when they won that game by a 4-1 score.

Now Tyee goes on to the state quarterfinals Saturday, May 18 for the first time when the Totems pay a 7 p.m. visit to Franklin Pierce High School of Tacoma.

The Totems are aiming to win that loser-out game and earn a berth into the May 24 state Class 2A semifinals to be played at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium in Sumner. The championship game follows for the winner the next day and the loser plays for the third place state trophy.

Tyee would love to add those firsts to its history, but first they had to win Tuesday's game against Capital played at Highline Memorial.

It was the Cougars who scored first in that game to put the pressure on the Totems, with Kellen O'Neill striking on a Riccio assist in the 20th minute of play.

Tyee tied it up again in the 39th minute. Osvaldo Lopez found the back of the net on an Aguiniga assist.

Liam Maginnas put Tyee on top in the 52nd minute of action, knocking in a penalty kick.

Hamidou Kante added to the lead on a Maginnas assist in the 53rd minute and Lopez scored another insurance goal in the 75th minute on an assist from Kante.

Bainbridge 1, Kennedy 0

Bainbridge Island dealt the Lancers of Kennedy out of the state 3A playoffs by shutting them out in the first game of a soccer double-header at Highline Memorial on Tuesday.

Frederickson earned the shutout on goal for Bainbridge and Fawley scored the game's only goal in the 77th minute -- with three minutes remaining. Hoonan recorded the assist.

Ferris 4, Mt. Rainier 2

Mount Rainier of Des Moines travelled all the way to Spokane for its state opener Tuesday and came back with only a 4-2 loss to show for it.
The Rams had been hoping for a win to give them a return trip to Eastern Washington on Saturday, when they would have visited Union or Davis in the Yakima area.

Softball teams eliminated at district

Three fastpitch softball teams from the Highline Times/Des Moines News area journeyed to Sprinker Recreation Center in Spanaway for West Central District/Southwest Washington tournament action in three different classifications, and all three were quickly eliminated.

Of the three, Mount Rainier came the closest to winning.

The Rams lost to South Kitsap in their 10 a.m. Class 4A opener by a 9-4 score, then were dumped into a loser-out game against powerful Puyallup.

The Vikings dispatched Mount Rainier, 11-0, in a 2 p.m. contest.
Kennedy Catholic, on the other hand, started with a 2 p.m. game, but it was loser out.

The Lancers came up short of Timberline, 12-6, in a high scoring game.
Foster opened 2A action with a 12 p.m. game and also had a short stay. The Bulldogs took a 13-1 loss to Kingston to be ousted.

The teams were trying to break through to state tournament play next week.

Seattle Christian, on the other hand, was not set to start Tri-District action until Saturday at the Kent Service Fields. The Warriors play the winner of the Lynden Christian-University Prep game at 4 p.m.
The winner of that game advances to play a 6 p.m. game for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds to state.

Lancers head into post season

TACOMA - Darian Grimm's walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning delivered a 5-4 Class 3A non league fast pitch home softball win for defending Class 3A champion Wilson against current Seamount champion and undefeated Kennedy Catholic on Wednesday, May 8, as both squads built momentum for post season play.

"We try to schedule quality non league opponents," said Lancer head coach Dino Josie. "Wilson is always well coached. "This was a well played game. There was good defense, pitching and hitting. We have seven freshmen and three sophomores, so this bodes well for now and in the years to come. I feel very good about how the girls competed well. They showed lots of toughness and had quality at bats."

Kennedy Catholic wielded the hammer early. With one out in the top of the first inning, Miranda Goff drew a base on balls to bring Sierra Baines to the plate. Seeing a pitch to her liking on a 1-and-1 count, Baines turned on the ball and connected for home run that was gone on contact with the ball rising over the left field fence to send the Lancers into a 2-0 lead.

"I just wanted to start a rally," observed Baines. "I just tried to deliver. When I hit it, it just felt right. We're excited to see where we can go."

KC added to its lead in the third inning. Goff lined a one-out single to left field that was followed by a Baines double into the left center field gap. One out later, Delaney Knox flipped an RBI singles just over the left side of the infield to increase the Lancer lead to 3-0.

In the fourth inning, Haley Kormanik lashed a base hit and eventually scored on a throwing error by the Ram catcher and Kennedy Catholic's lead became 4-0.

Lancer pitcher Kate Lewis were strongly tested by Wilson threats in the second and third innings, but were able to hold the rams off the scoreboard.

Wilson showed how tough it is to keep a good team down by finally breaking through for a run in the bottom of the third inning when Carsen Stanley crushed a solo homer far over the left field fence.

A walk and a bad hop single in the infield opened the door for a pair of Ram runs in the fifth inning before Wilson tied the encounter at 4-4 on a Sinclair Gomes run-scoring single in the sixth to set the stage for Grimm's game winning blast.

"We hit really well," said an upbeat Lewis. "We hustled, competed and worked our butts off. This was excellent because it showed we can compete."

Maggie Gallagher helped the Kennedy Catholic offense by batting 3-for-4 with a double and triple while Baines was 3-for-4, including a double, triple and two RBI.

Wilson went on to capture the 3A sub-district title at Boise Creek Six-Plex in Enumclaw while Kennedy Catholic (18-3) lost a 9-0 game to Bonney Lake before being edged out, 7-6, by Peninsula. on Thursday, May 9.

Mount Rainier scores at sub-district

AUBURN - On the heels of a fine SPSL 4A North 8-2 second place regular season, the Mount Rainier girls tennis team reiterated and in some ways empowered itself more at the 2013 SPSL 4A sub-district tournament held at Auburn Riverside High School.

Following Monday, May 6, action the Tim Lee-coached Rams held a clear second place total of 31 points behind sub-district champion Thomas Jefferson's 40 based on the strength of its singles players while also qualifying personnel to the West Central/Southwest Washington bi-district tournament scheduled for May 17-18 at the Capitol City Court in Olympia.

Beginning with the round of 16, the Rams brought the fire to the well warmed courts with junior Kristana Stevanovic, senior Tajana Vujic and sophomore Anya Bonner.

For beginnings, Stevanovic stroked by Mari Bolkvadze of Puyallup, 6-1, 6-0, but was then sent into the consolation round, 6-0, 6-0, by eventual champion Lauren Thornquist of Auburn. The top Ram player then rebounded to capture a 6-0, 6-3, two-set victory against the Puyallup Vikings' Anna Flury to reach the consolation semifinals where she earned the No. 4 seed to bi-district in a rugged three-set affair against Aly Siemion of Auburn.

Stevanovic annexed the first set, 6-3, before her opponent reversed the momentum in a 6-1 second set win. In the third set, Stevanovic once again shifted into high gear for a 6-3 triumph. Narrows No. 3 Mina Craig of Olympia will be her first bi-district opponent in a May 17 8:15 a.m. match.

Siemion gave Vujic a 6-2, 6-4, defeat before Vujic posted a 6-4, 6-3, decision against Coco hernandez-Tague of Thomas Jefferson. Jessica Lam of Kentridge defeated Vujic, 6-3, 6-1, but the Mount Rainier athlete overcame Bolkvadze, 6-0, 6-2, and earned the ninth SPSL seed into bi-district by eliminating Flury. No.1 Narrows seed Kaitlyn Skjonsby of South Kitsap awaits Vujic on Friday, May 17.

Bonner fell just short in her bid for bi-district placing. Thomas Jefferson's Michelle Lee dominated Bonner, 6-1, 6-0, to send the resilient Ram into treacherous waters. Chelsea Rueppell of Rogers (Puyallup) forced a struggling Bonner into the ropes after a 6-love first set pummeling. Bonner regrouped strategically and mentally to bring home the win in 6-1 and 6-3 set wins. Siemion allowed Bonner little breathing room in a 6-2, 6-0, defeat of the Ram athlete in the next match. Next came Flury to short-circuit Bonner's bid for bi-district, 6-1, 6-3, on the way to be eliminated by Vujic.

Two Mount Rainier tandems ventured into the super tough doubles competition.

Seniors Beverly Crock and Grace Hilsen initiated their round of 16 by defeating Bethel's Gunderson and Berner, 6-0, 6-2. Jenny Hoefel and Kiele Bowman of Todd Beamer stopped the Ram pair's progress, 6-2, 6-3. Nichelle Song and Gloria Oh of TJ went three pulsating sets before upending Mount Rainier, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Crock and Hilsen survived Abbie Clements and Ariana Bovenkamp of Puyallup, 6-4, 6-0, to earn a shot at the ninth and final seed to sub-district.

Madie Wright and Alex Boyle ran aground, 6-0, 6-0, against Hoefel and Bowman in their opener of the round of 16 before winning against Gundersen and Berner of Bethel.
SLIDESHOW: Evergreen holds off late rally by Foster to win 9-5 in softball

Foster girls’ softball team played host to Evergreen on Friday, May 3rd for a Seamount Conference game played at Tukwila Community Center. This was the last regular season game for both teams. Foster came into the game with a 5-win, 8-loss conference record while Evergreen was at 3 wins and 10 losses. The first time these teams met, Foster won the contest over Evergreen, 11-6.

Evergreen was up to bat first. In that inning, they sent six batters to the plate and scored two runs.

In the bottom of the first inning Evergreen’s catcher and team captain, Pulemau Savusa threw out Foster’s Veronica Sun at second base and Alexia Barlow at third base for attempting to steal.

Coach Angeles commented on Foster’s speedster Alexia Barlow being thrown out. “I think when we threw her out it kind of set the tone. I don’t think they were quite as aggressive after that.” So if one play can change a team’s momentum, then that could have been it.

Evergreen would go on to score one run in the 2nd, two in the 5th, and four in the 6 th inning. Evergreen led by a score of 9-0 in the 6th before Foster even got on the board. Evergreen looked like they were in cruise control, doing the things they should, as Foster just didn’t seem to have an answer.

Well, it wasn’t until the bottom of the 6th inning that Foster got their momentum going. They were at the top of their batting order and things started clicking. They sent all nine of their players up to bat and scored 4 runs. Now this looked like a team that just would not go away quietly!

Evergreen did not score in the top of the 7th, but was Foster capable of a comeback win?

Again, Foster was at the top of their batting order, just where they wanted to be. But, to the dismay of the team and their fans, they were only able to score one run in that inning. Their comeback ended up being too little, too late as Evergreen defeated Foster by a score of 9-5.

Before the game, Coach Angeles told his pitcher Tori Mulitauopele, “If you throw strikes, we win!” Well, I guess he was spot on with that statement. He also told me, "Our team came out with some motivation because Foster is a little higher up in our league standings and they played well and I’m proud of them.”

It’s interesting to note that only one player on coach Angeles’ team has any real softball experience. That is left fielder Keiki Waiau, who has played at PacWest. That’s why it’s important for Evergreen to have a JV team, he said; it’s a good way to teach fundamentals before getting up to the varsity level.

“It’s been a fun year”, coach Angeles said. “This was our last league game and now we go to the sub-district tournament. I will be losing 5 or 6 seniors from this team so we’ll see what happens next year.”

Coach Angeles also had something to say about Foster's pitcher Veronica Sun. He knows her very well, because her family lived next door to him at one time. He remembers playing catch with Veronica and her sister Venseca when they were growing up. “She's a good pitcher and a good athlete”, added coach Angeles.

Foster’s coach Shauna Briggs has been with her team for five years. In the past, Foster has not had a winning record; last year they won only one game. They had to come up with other ways to have fun, so they focused on honoring the other teams, their opponents, and finding ways to focus on sportsmanship.

“At the beginning of the game, we all run over and give them snacks for coming,” coach Briggs said. “At the end of every home game, our girls have made ‘Player of the Game’ t-shirts for the other teams, just to honor them. They run over and call out whatever player our team voted on and give them the t-shirt.” No wonder the coaches from the other teams always say, you’re our favorite team to play. They feed them and honor them - nice!

Coach Briggs also commented on her center fielder, Alexia Barlow. “She's a cheerleader, with a big sparkly bow, who likes to roll around in the dirt. She is my only girl who can figure out the popup slide. Most of the time when the catcher throws down, she's already slid and popped up by the time the ball gets there.”

Thus ends another softball regular season with the playoffs about to begin. Both Foster and Evergreen qualified to play in the 2A Sub-District Softball Tournament to be held at Boise Creek Six-Plex in Enumclaw on Friday, May 10. Foster will play Franklin Pierce and Evergreen plays Fife, both games are scheduled at 4:00pm. Get out and support your team!

GREAT NEWS FOR FOSTER SOFTBALL! They have a brand new softball field. The first game to be played on their new field will be against Fife, on Wednesday, May 8th at 4pm. This game was scheduled so they could have a senior celebration on the new field, along with a BBQ following the game. Coach Briggs has been trying for five years to get a softball field, and now they finally have it.
SLIDESHOW: Totems trounce Lindbergh

Tyee is excelling in soccer.

The Totem boys team has jumped out to a 9-2 record in the Seamount League for second place behind only Hazen, including a decisive 5-1 victory over Lindbergh this past Friday.

"We play an A-level game every time we put it on the field," said Tyee head coach Allen Rider. "We work a lot on ball control and conditioning."

The Totems jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead by halftime Friday, then scaled back its attack in the second half.

Tyee went out of the locker room and played only nine players instead of the normal 11, and Lindbergh scored its only goal during the second half. The Eagles of Renton played with only 10 on the field the entire game because of a player shortage, not on purpose like the Totems.

"We were way up, and it was a chance to get the guys in," Rider said. "They only played with 10 the whole game. It didn't make sense rushing our guys in."

Tyee took the lead with only 1 minute, 15 seconds elapsed in the first half and never looked back.

Jose Aguiniga, a senior captain, drilled the ball into the left corner of the net to already make it 1-0.

Junior forward Ibrahima Sow struck for the second goal with 21:54 to play in the first half, also finding the left side of the net.

Senior forward/midfielder Liam Maginnis then nailled a hard shot to the back of the net at the 14:26 mark to pad the lead to 3-0, then sophomore midfielder Adama Kante struck just to the right of the middle of the net to make it 4-0 with 12:21 to go until halftime.

Maginnis scored the Totems' final goal with 2:50 left in the first half to make it 5-0.

"They know how to work the ball," said Rider of his players' success.
The suddenly short-handed Totems gave up Lindbergh's only goal of the game with 35:25 remaining in the second half.

Efrain Velasco did the honors for the Eagles, who remained behind the Totems by a 5-1 score the rest of the way.

Tyee is set to return to action Tuesday, when it visits Kennedy for a 6 p.m. game at the Starfire complex in Tukwila. The Totems visit Evergreen Friday before finishing up the regular Seamount League season at home against Hazen at 5:30 p.m. next Tuesday, April 30, at Highline Memorial.

Mt. Rainier 1, Auburn 0

Mount Rainier prevailed, 1-0, over the Auburn Trojans in the first game of a double-header at Highline Memorial last Friday.

The victory upped the Rams' record to 7-1-3, putting them second in the South Puget Sound League North Division. The top five teams in each division advance into the SPSL playoffs at the end of the season.

The Rams got off to a slow start in Friday's game, not scoring until 35:48 remained in the second half.

"It was a little frustrating," said Mount Rainier head coach Steve Mohn. "We did not have a great first half. We were lucky it was 0-0 at halftime"

The second half was a different story, however, as the Rams put the only goal they needed in with only 4:12 elapsed.

"We came out and played a pretty good second half," said Mohn. "I thought we deserved to win."

Isaac Gettis scored for the Rams, taking a penalty kick and drilling it on to the back of the net. It struck so hard that it bounced back out off the net about 10 yards from the goal mouth.

Mount Rainier went on to dominate the second half, but did not find the net again.

The Rams did not need to, as goalie Chase Casias and the Mount Rainier defense put together the sixth shutout of the year for the team.

Casias had to leave briefly in the second half because of an injury.
Mount Rainier will be at home at Highline Memorial playing Kentwood Tuesday, April 23 before going to Tahoma on Thursday, April 25. The Rams are at home against Auburn-Riverside Saturday, April 27.
All three matches are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Rams close out their season with a 3:30 p.m. visit to Thomas Jefferson at Federal Way Memorial Field Friday, May 3. The SPSL playoffs take place Wednesday, May 8.

SLIDESHOW: Sports Roundup for 4-15-13

Friday, April 12
Baseball
Tyee 5, Highline 5
It's a time of suspense for the Tyee and Highline baseball teams.
The two teams fought bravely through the rain at Moshier Field this past Friday, only to have the score left in a 5-5 tie through seven innings of play after the rain and puddles became too much to continue.
For now the game will be left in a tie, although it may be finished at a later date.
"Hopefully we can finish the game," said Highline head coach David Johnson, whose team stands at 3-3-1 including the tie.
Johnson was impressed with the game's action on the field so far.
"It was a hard fought game," Johnson said. "The guys played solid defense. I have a lot of kudos for Jermaine, their coach. Tyee has come a long way."
Johnson, who is assisted by Ed Sullivan, is in his first year as the Highline coach.
"Hopefully things will pick up the last part of the season," he said.
Leading the way for the Pirates was Jordan Sagmoen, who struck out nine on the mound, while teammate Dave Erickson hit 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI batting in the leadoff position.
Tyee had four doubles.
Highline got the early jump on the Totems, scoring one run in the bottom of the third. Tyee answered with one in the top of the fourth before the Pirates erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Tyee was not phased by the rally, answering with its own four-run rally in the top of the fifth.
The 5-5 score remained until the rain brought the action to a premature end.
Next up, Tyee hosts Foster for a 3:30 p.m. game Wednesday and Highline is on the road at Hazen. Renton visits Highline at the same time Friday and Tyee goes to Lindbergh.
Boys soccer
Foster 0, Kennedy 0
Foster and Kennedy played each other to a 0-0 tie in the rain at the Starfire complex in Tukwila on Friday.

Sports Briefs for 4-5-13

Burien's Knopp set to fight April 27
Halquist Productions will be returning to the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA for CageSport XXIV, which has quickly become the hottest MMA ticket in the Northwest. At the top of the card will be Burien's Brent Knopp (4-0) defending his middleweight title for the first time against CJ Marsh (2-2). In the co-main event, current bantamweight champion, Brandon Hempleman, will also be defending his title for the first time when he takes on Cory Vom Baur (6-2).

Tickets for CageSport XXIV, set for Saturday, April 27th, are still available and can be purchased through Ticketmaster or at the Emerald Queen Casino box office. Doors will open at 6:00 PM with the first fight scheduled for 7:00 PM. Fans are encouraged to buy tickets early as tickets for CageSport XXIII in February were sold out a week in advance for the 2000 seat showroom.

“We’re really excited about presenting two CageSport title fights in one night. This show is building off momentum from previous shows and it’s very exciting to see CageSport growing the way it’s growing. I really encourage fans to purchase tickets early as we are experiencing extremely fast ticket sales,” said promoter, Brian Halquist, about upcoming CageSport XXIV.

Middleweight champion Brent “Mankill” Knopp has quickly established himself as the top middleweight in the region. Knopp won the vacant title in February when he defeated Darrio Mobley for the second time in a rematch from when they first faced each other at CageSport XX last year. None of the opponents that Knopp has come across in his professional career have lasted more than two rounds in the ring with the former University of Washington reserve defensive lineman; all going down via TKO/KO.

It’s been no surprise that the Burien native, Knopp, has been as successful as he has been. He trains out of Matt Hume’s AMC Pankration, one of the most respected MMA gyms and coaches in the Northwest located in Kirkland, WA. Along with the undefeated professional record of 4-0, Knopp also went 24-2 in the amateurs.
SLIDESHOW: Tyee Scores 6 Runs in Bottom of 7th for Comeback Win

The location was Valley Ridge Park, the game was baseball. Seattle Christian, which actually overlooks the park and Tyee High School, played their neighbor on Saturday, March 30th.

This was a non-league game. Seattle Christian, who plays in the Nisqually 1A Conference, came into the game with a record of 3 wins and 5 losses, while Tyee plays in the Seamount Conference and has a 5 wins and 2 losses record.

As to the weather, well, what a difference a week makes! A week ago I was freezing at a track meet, but on this day, I actually got a sunburn. The sun was totally out, not a cloud in the sky, but there was a bit of a breeze. It was so nice I felt I could have burst out in a chorus of, “Take me out to the ball game”, but luckily for everyone I didn’t!

Both teams are young: Tyee has three freshmen who start for them, and three of their four pitchers are freshman. SC also has three freshmen starters.

Both teams played their share of games during the week. Including this game, Seattle Christian played four games in six days and Tyee played four games in five days.

With that many games being played in a short period of time, pitching does become an issue for teams who have innings left to pitch. It is a statistic closely watched by teams and it needs to be. WIAA rules limit how many innings a pitcher can throw.

[ From The WIAA Handbook, Specific Sport Rules and Regulations.
51.5.0 PITCHER LIMITATION
When a pitcher pitches four (4) innings or more in a contest which began and ended on the same day or in a day, the pitcher shall not pitch again until two (2) calendar days have elapsed.
51.5.1 One (1) pitch constitutes an inning.]

Well that sums it up - the WIAA wants to protect a pitcher, as they should, from an overuse injury.

As the game began, you could see that Seattle Christian took control, and Tyee struggled. SC was able to take advantage of Tyee’s starting pitcher Ryu Ito. SC scored two runs in the first inning and three in the second inning. SC starting pitcher Tyler Ridings was able to shut Tyee down. In the first five innings they were only able to score one run in the second.

Several times Tyee had the bases loaded but never got that clutch hit they needed because SC would stop the rally. Two times Tyee had SC runners caught in a rundown, which should have been an easy out, only to have a fielder make a bad ball toss and let the base runner get back to the bag.

In the sixth inning, SC put two more runs on the board but this time Tyee did the same, making it an 8-3 game. And now, as the commercial says, “But wait, there’s more!”

SC started having some pitching problems - they were giving up walks. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Tyee put together a late rally so SC made a pitching change. SC Coach Chris Fox took out Kyle Hefferen and replaced him with Nate Wollam. That didn’t seem to stop Tyee from continuing their burst of scoring runs.

I don’t know what you would call it, a second wind, energy burst, restored strength, second energy burst? Whatever you call it, it just worked! Tyee was able to conjure up six – yes, I said six - runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. “ Holy scoring, Batman!” It was all SC could do to try and stop the bleeding, but sadly for the SC team and fans, it was to no avail. It is important to note that all nine players got up to bat for Tyee in the 7th inning.

That ninth batter, Tyee’s Jar Yourglitch, only a freshman, had the hit that brought teammate Kyle Howell home for the win. He was also the pitcher who got the win for Tyee.

After the game, Coach Mack said, “It was a great day to play baseball. It almost looked like we were burned-out and didn't want to be out here. Our pitchers were sore and burned-out. The kids came through and didn't give up and played hard and that's the way these kids have been. They’ve been fighting hard, won't give up and they do things the right way.”

Coach Mack added, “Overall I'm proud of the kids. It's a big win for our program because now they see that no matter what the situation is, you just never give up fighting till the very end. Today was a collective win for us, everybody played a part. Everybody's playing as a team and we never give up. Be positive and positive things will happen. I believe in them and need to keep them believing in themselves.”

The game statistics would lead you to believe it should have been a Seattle Christian win, but again, statistics can be misleading. Tyee had a total of 3 errors in the game while SC had 0. Now this next statistic is hard to believe: Seattle Christian had 12 hits to only 6 for Tyee, and Tyee won the game, 9-8. That obviously had to do with all the walks SC gave up.

Seattle Christian game highlights: Shawn Abe and Shane Pierotti scored 3 runs apiece.
Tyee game highlights : Brock O'Brien and Isaak Wiebe scored 2 runs apiece.

Kudos to Seattle Christian, as they consistently have a good baseball team. I can’t say that for Tyee, though, as they have had problems in the past. With the help of Coach Mack, Tyee has been working on rebuilding their baseball program. It is nice to know that Tyee, only halfway into the season, has already won more games than all of last year. Now that is a good start on rebuilding a program!

SLIDESHOW: Slow rollers send Pirates on their way

Two slow rollers made the difference as the Highline High School boys soccer team scored a 3-1 Seamount League victory over the Lindbergh Eagles this past Friday.

The first soft grounder that found its way to the back of the net came eight minutes into the match played at Highline Memorial and was actually scored by Lindbergh.

Senior midfielder Joel Hernandez was the last Pirates player to touch the ball, which was then rolled back by a Lindbergh defender with it slipping past the goalie.

It then crept over into the left back corner of the net.

The next goal for Highline was scored with 26 minutes, 27 seconds left in the first half and almost looked like an instant replay of the first goal.

This ball was sent on its way by Highline junior midfielder Alexandru Muresan, however, and this time it went past the Eagles' goalie on its own. It then dribbled into the left back corner.

The Pirates' third goal was more of the conventional variety, only the weather provided an assist.

Sophomore forward Eduardo Valdovinos sent a longer and harder shot into the middle of the net. The score came with 24:38 to play in the first half as the Lindbergh goalie battled the wind and a driving rain and held up through halftime.

Lindbergh did not put a crooked number on the scoreboard until 25:11 remained in the second half.

It came on a penalty kick that was called well inside the box and to the left and was drilled past a row of Pirates defenders and the goalie and in for a score.

Efrain Velasco, a junior forward, did the scoring honors.

Highline came close to scoring again in the closing minutes.

One apparent Pirates goal was called back on an offsides ruling, then time ran out after a penalty kick was called in the closing seconds. A strong wind made the ball tough to settle in front of the goal box, but Highline already had the victory in hand.

Next up for the Pirates is a 7:30 p.m. visit to the Tyee Totems on Wednesday, April 10.

Mount Rainier wins at Auburn

AUBURN- Brianna Pighin's deep, two-run single in a five-run Mount Rainier fourth inning snapped a 4-4 standoff in a 7-4 come from behind SPSL 4A North Division fastpitch softball win against Auburn at the Gsa Fields.

With the win, the talented Rams solidified their fourth place standing at 4-2 league and 5-3 overall as the Trojans fell to 2-4 in the North.

"Our team batting average is 100 points higher than last year," observed Ram head coach Ben Reindel. "Today, it was a little shaky, at first because we arrived late and only had 15 minutes to warm up. Jasmin has taken the role of our everyday big game pitcher. Our captains Tristen and Jasmin have taken the effort to lead by example and uplift the others. Six of our starting players are in their first or second year of playing here. On defense we're really making an effort to shore up every spot. According to some coaches, Jasmin may be the best pitcher in the league, We're definitely looking to make the playoffs and see what can happen, then."

Auburn grabbed the lead with a two-run first inning before Mount Rainier countered in the top of the third. Ciana Defore drew a base on balls with one out and eventually moved up to second base on a wild pitch. One out later Mariah Peterson singled to set up runners on first and third before scoring on a wild pitch to close the gap to 2-1.

In the home half of the inning, the Trojans rebounded to notch a pair of runs on a walk, double and and wild pitch to stream ahead 4-1.

Then came the furious fourth inning broadside from Mount Rainier. Consecutive singles by Jasmin Fulmore and Tristen Yong set up scoring opportunities. Left handed hitting Orion Schade belted a two-run double and Nise' Liusamoa followed with an RBI single to knot the score at 4-4. Up stepped Pighin to deliver the go ahead runs.

"I took an inside straight ball," said Pighin who finished with a 2-for-4 batting day, including a triple two RBI. "We can accomplish going to district and going to state."

Mount Rainier added a final tally in the seventh on Pighin's deep blast triple and Mariah Peterson's run-scoring ground out.

By then, starting pitcher Fulmore had taken control after a shaky first three innings. Over the course of the final four innings, Fulmore closed out Auburn on no hits and no runs on the way to a complete game four-hit win and 16 strikeouts.

"It took awhile to warm up, but I was seeing the batters again and becoming more familiar with them," she said. "We work together as team and make sure we play our game."

Schade had a nice day at the plate, batting 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base. Yong was 2-for-4 with a double and a single. Rylee Lewis batted 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for Auburn.

Federal Way native Hank Conger found a home with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim from day one of the season this year.

Conger, a catcher who has only been with the Angels for parts of seasons only, made the Angels' opening day roster after hitting .359 (14-for-39) in spring training with two doubles, one triple and four home runs while driving in 16 runs and scoring eight.

Ishikawa sent to Norfolk

Travis Ishikawa, a product of Federal Way High School, was assigned to the Baltimore Orioles' minor league camp after spending spring training with the Major League Baseball team.

Ishikawa is expected to start at first base for the Orioles' Class AAA team in Norfolk.

He hit .257 (9-for-35) this spring after signing a minor league contract with the Orioles over the winter. He has previous experience with the San Francisco Giants -- including their 2010 World Series championship team -- and last year was with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Pirates win season opener

Highline High School opened its 2013 fast pitch softball season with a non league 13-2 win against the Roosevelt Roughriders on Monday, March 18, at Moshier Park after participating in a weekend jamboree at Mount Rainier High School.

It was a 10-run first inning that was sufficient enough to settle the issue against a hard trying but over matched Metro League opponent. Highline had 15 at bats in the inning that was interspersed with some good hitting and Roosevelt mistakes. In two at bats, Mikki Haury slammed a double plus a single for three runs batted in. Hope McElwain doubled for an RBI while Nicole Jacobson and Jenny Hovland also plated one runner each among the scoring highlights.

The Pirates spent the rest of the game working on some skills and techniques while the Roughriders kept at it until they were able to score a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Before that, the Pirates had amassed a 13-0 margin and the match up ended on the 10-run mercy rule.
First year head coach Rod Pierce was pleased to inherit an excellent blend of experience and youth in a team that reached West Central bi-district last season. Among his previous coaching experiences, Pierce has three years of Class 3A
